Who can become a NAWI Alliance Member?
The main criteria for joining the Alliance is a commitment to the common goal of advancing water treatment research in the U.S. and stimulating research collaborations between NAWI members.
Individuals or groups from any U.S. organization with an interest in advancing water treatment science and technology (including private sector companies, educational institutions, nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations, and Federal and state agencies) can apply for Alliance membership. Non-U.S. organizations are also welcome to join after approval from the U.S. Department of Energy.

How do I become a NAWI Alliance member?

My organization has an interest in advancing the state of the art of desalination, the treatment and beneficial reuse of nontraditional water sources, or the policy issues associated with these subjects. How can we get engaged in the NAWI program?
You can engage with the NAWI program in two ways:
-
Apply to join the NAWI Alliance and, upon approval, engage with NAWI’s network of 1,600+ members via the NAWI Alliance community website.
-
Seek out and partner with water treatment researchers whose projects align with the goals of your organization. Every project funded by NAWI needs active industry engagement.
My organization is a for-profit company. Are we eligible to receive direct funding for research projects we propose?
U.S. private entities eligible to receive federal funding are eligible to submit proposals. It is unusual for private companies to have experience conducting early-stage applied research (most private-sector R&D is directed to higher technology readiness level [TRL] activities than the TRL 2-4 scope the DOE has defined for this project). In some cases, it may be easier (especially for companies that have not previous received and managed federal funds) to partner with an academic or national lab researcher.
My organization is located outside of the United States. Are we eligible to join the NAWI Alliance?
We encourage non-U.S. public and private entities to join the NAWI Alliance. The U.S. Department of Energy has a standard procedure for approving participation by non-U.S. entities.
